Holbox

Island discovery

Island discovery

Holbox - Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico

Experience two beautiful islands in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula in one day and enjoy miles of beaches and breathtaking landscapes.

Between the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico the famous island Holbox and the still almost unknown Cabo Catoche are located. Both islands consist only of sand and are part of the nature reserve of "Yum Balam" which was founded in 1994.

The island Holbox is 42 km long and about 2 km wide. The northern part of the island (34 km), which leads towards Cabo Catoche, is like Cabo Catoche itself, almost untouched. A beautiful scenery of mangroves, palm trees, white beaches and countless birds. Besides pelicans, cormorants and frigate birds, you can also observe flamingos in great numbers between May and October.

The fishing village of Holbox is already developed for tourism and is known above all for its colourful murals and long, flat beaches. Cabo Catoche, on the other hand, is almost uninhabited and very pristine. Here you can find endless natural beaches and pure idyll between palm trees and hammocks.

Experience a day full of variety and enjoy these two amazing and yet so contrasting islands.

Flamingos in Holbox

Detailed tour description:

We start our boat tour in Chiquila with a trip through the lagoon of Yalahau. First we will head to a Cenote in the middle of the mangroves. The clear water we will find there comes from an underground spring, here you will get the time to bath in the refreshing water.

On the way to Holbox Island you can observe various bird species, such as pelicans, herons, cormorants and ospreys. Between May and November we can also meet countless flamingos.

Enjoy a walk in the shallow water at the so-called "passion island", climb up to a viewpoint tower and enjoy the view over the turquoise water.

On Holbox we have golf cars available for 1 hour to drive around the island. While driving through the "centre" we can admire and photograph the colourful little houses and the countless wall paintings.

After the lunch at the beach you will have some free time to stroll through the little town.

Our boat takes us to our last stop - a sandbank, where you will enjoy bathing in the flat water and having one or more drinks before we head back to Chiquila.
